SYMBOL :-
It is defined as an abbreviation (short hand sign) for the full name of an element.
Ex :- Hydrogen is represented by the symbol 'H'
Oxygen is represented by the symbol 'O'
The first letter of the symbol is always capital while the second one is always small.
Ex :- Symbol of Nickel is 'Ni' not 'NI'.

A symbol of an element has qualitative and quantitative significance.
Qualitative :- It gives the name of an element.
Ex :- 'O' stands for oxygen, 'S' stands for Sulphur etc.
Quantitative :- It represents ---
i) One atom of an element
ii) The number of parts by mass of an element.
iii) One gram atom of an element.
Ex :- "S" represents --
i) One atom of sulphur.
ii) 32 parts by mass of sulphur.
iii) One gram atom of sulphur i.e 32 grams.
